The environmental impacts of consumerism

Dear Editor:

I am writing this to express my thoughts and concerns about the negative effects of consumerism on our environment.

Although consumerism plays a big role in sustaining an economy, it also plays a bigger role in negatively impacting our environment. Factories create a huge amount of greenhouse gases that are harmful to our atmosphere and also spew a lot of oil damaging our water sources and its habitants. The majority of the trees on earth have been cut down in order to make products for our consumers. Humans will need two earths in twenty years if we continue to use our natural resources at this rate.

There are many solutions to this problem. A simple one would be to raise awareness of the environmental damage that is caused by consumerism. People should only buy things that they need, and not excessively spend their money. This is a huge problem in North America and it needs to stop.

You can help spread the awareness by informing your friends and family about this issue. You can also visit the environmental website at www.savetheenvironment.com. We can make a change just by spreading the word.

Sincerely,

Treating the invisible wounds of war

Many homes and families were wrecked during the war in Sudan. The harm left behind from the war was not only physical, but also emotional. Emotional damage can take a lot more time to heal as wounds in our heart are more painful than our skin. To me, this picture is saying how internal pain cannot be seen but can surely be felt. Emmanuel Jal did not only have to face the physical pains of being a child soldier, but also the feelings he felt as he learned about his family members’ deaths and not being able to see them again. Soldiers such as Emanuel fight in wars all around the world just to protect loved ones or their motherland.  Music was his only way to let all these feelings out as he needed an escape route. The words to his songs come straight from his heart also where all his scars have developed. The fact that he got to see so many of his family members after such a long time was truly a miracle. Although Emanuel’s childhood was ruined because of the war, he managed to succeed in life and make something out of himself.

Until your good is better and your better is best.

“Good, better, best. Never let it rest. Until your good is better and your better is best.” ― Tim Duncan

Hard work and determination are like the steps of a staircase, they are your only way to the top. The meaning of this quote is that if you want to get better at something, you must take the initiative and stay dedicated towards working hard each day to fulfill your goal. Whether your goal is to get better, or to be the best, you will ultimately have to work harder than your limit in hopes of improving. This quote always encourages me to make a continuous effort to enhance my abilities. I’m not that great of a basketball player, but recently I have been noticing a few improvements in many areas because of my continuous practice. There aren’t any professional athletes that were good at a sport from the very beginning; practice was their key to achieving excellence. Everyone should keep in mind that success is not achieved overnight; it is rather scavenged gradually over time.
