The understanding of why people need to take action to challenge the effects of consumerism.

Dear Editor:

I am writing to you regarding your publication , The Lorax. I believe that it is very important to let consumers know the effects of their shopping beyond the checkout till. Consumerism is the base of our economy , we will buy and buy more and more as long as the sun is burning , its a huge part of our culture ! But sadly many people don’t know the effects their shopping has on the environment, while it’s being made and what they do with their purchases when they are no longer a use to them!

Often big businesses such as Wal-Mart go to undeveloped countries and completely get rid of their natural resources , for example they will go to a rainforest  and take out whole entire chunks of forest ! While they are at it their machines are polluting the air and ruining these places’ environment. All this just so big companies can pay as little as possible. Unlike their low low prices and roll backs Wal-Mart sure doesn’t advertise that if you buy their products you are helping destroy 3rd world and developing countries.

The pollution doesn’t stop once it gets to the consumers home oh no , it has only just began. Once the consumer sees their purchases no longer useful they will toss it in the trash with no second thoughts ! It will end up in a dump , just taking up space on our lovely planet and releasing chemicals and toxins.

I urge all of your readers to look into purchasing things that are made locally and/or are environmentally friendly , unless of course they would like to kepp decreasing the life span of our earth!

Sincerly,

Katelyn Marchyshyn

War Child

Bravery may be hard to achieve but once you choose to be brave you will be thankful for that desicion. The picture I have chosen is of a women skydiving . I chose this picture because often skydiving is not done because of fear , but this woman is being brave . Throughout War Child Emmanuel Jal described to us some of thesituations he went through as a child. Through all of them he chose to be brave beacuse he had to to survive. He could of cowered’ out and stopped fighting every day but he would not be here today. The motif of bravery comes out in every single story he tells us

Everything has beauty.

“Everything has beauty, but not everyone can see.” –Confucius

This Quote by Confucius is very significant to me for all of the following reasons. First of all I strongly believe in this quote and think it is a great idea to live by. Everything in this world does have beauty , often it is very hard to find because we tend to put ourselves in a more negative mind set when something not so great happens ,  making it hard to see the beauty of a situation. An example of this is your car breaks down,  and your mom or dad has to drive you everywhere , normally your mentality towards this situation is , this is terrible. But there is beauty behind it , you get to spend more time with your mom and dad which is precious time that you would not have gotten if your car never broke down. This quote can also be applied to people , a lot of people think that they are not beautiful at all. Maybe they just can’t see it themselves but everything and everyone has beauty on the inside and on the outside.
